I spend much of today talking and presenting to teachers and administrators at the Hudsonville Public Schools at the Baldwin Middle School including this presentation on possible iPad and iPod apps. The Hudsonville Public Schools has initiated an iPad/iPod initiative to provide one to one computing for their students. It can be seen at
During this week’s discussion I decided to comment on project based learning and the use of the latest technology called the Ipad. The Ipad is a multimedia device that has many features and educational options. The presentation introduces us to an experimental phase of using the Ipad to instruct students in learning skills. Project based learning options are meant to give students real world scenarios that can be related to school based activities. These activities will be related to learning objectives.
In the presentation there were many applications that can be used to instruct many subjects. The presentation made a point of explaining the use of the Ipad tablet to instruct students with the use of various software applications. The applications that the Ipad uses are dependent upon the educator. There are applications that can be used for mathematics, science and social sciences. The application that I am familiar with is the use of the world history maps. I like using this application for my navigation lessons. Especially when I am instructing navigation systems such as VOR or DME. I would like the students to identify geographical points of a map. (Lenway & Peterson)
The use of an E-reader comes in handy when performing book reviews. I believe that this application serves the educator in instructing reading comprehension. The educator can use this application to instruct students how to read with understanding. The social experiment of using Ipads in the classroom reminds me of the early days of using personal computers to teach certain skill sets. An example of this skill set is learning how to use the technology of the Ipad. Many students do not own one of these tablets. I believe the best way students can learn the use of this technology is just free exploring its features. (Lenway & Peterson)
Today’s students are computer friendly with all sorts of technology. They can pick up and understand the information at great ease. The presentation states that critical learning and problem solving can be achieved by using this type of technology. If students work in groups or teams of two too solve a problem. They will retain the skill of troubleshooting and critical thinking to solve problems. I believe that this skill is an ideal start for a student to achieve success in the classroom or the working environment. These types of skills are invaluable if the student can attain them. (Lenway & Peterson)
The presentation also states it opens the door for students to become world communicators within a classroom environment. The reason why I am a proponent of this practice is based on the use the internet connection to a wifi network. The student can use this network to publish his or her work. I believe this practice can help students become familiar with presentation and multimedia skills that can help them in the college environment. These types of skills are needed in an ever changing workforce we live in. When the student is exposed to issues about the world he or she lives in, they are exposed to lifelong learning. As an educator it is my duty to help students become lifelong learners. If I achieve that practice in the classroom, the student will benefit in the future. (Lenway & Peterson)
In closing, I believe that Ipads are a great tool to help educators bridge the gap within technologies of today and the past. If the applications are used correctly students will reap the benefits of learning the technology. When the student understands software applications and project based learning he or she will attain success in life.
Apple have always been the state-of-the-art technological opener for creating so innovative technologies. My question is would be possibility to have those application to work cross platforms for when other pad devices start invading school as laptops. Parents, students, Administrators and teachers sometimes would like to be free of any monopoly caused by technology developers.
